Sketch – Three Rattan Lamps

Last updated on 8 Jan 2025

I was at Ulekan, a charming Indonesian restaurant in Canggu, sketching these three rattan lamps that hung like storytellers over the tables.

Outside, Bali’s streets buzzed with motorbikes and cars navigating narrow roads and chaotic crossroads.

Yet, the drivers moved with a quiet respect-giving way, honking only as a gentle nudge, never in anger.

Inside, the aroma of spices and fragrant rempah dishes filled the air, and a temple rite unfolded in the background, the rhythmic clanging of percussion weaving into the hum of conversations.

The food was a celebration on its own-vibrant, soulful, and deeply satisfying. And amidst it all, those lamps held the space, glowing softly, almost grounding the chaos into something sacred.

That’s Bali for you-unexpected harmony in every corner.
